Getting Started with the stratāgaia Corporate Strategy Navigator

Effective Date: 1st September, 2025

Step 1: Download and Open

  • Open the .pbit file in Power BI Desktop.

  • Save it as a .pbix file to begin editing.

Step 2: Customise the Framework: Insert your known content

  • Replace placeholder text with your organisation’s strategy content, all pillars, goals, and initiatives.

  • Add visuals such as bar charts, scorecards, or timelines to represent progress.

Step 3: Connect Your Existng Data

  • Use Power BI’s native connectors to link your own data sources (Excel, SQL, SharePoint, etc.).

  • Ensure your visuals reflect live data for ongoing strategy tracking.

Step 4: Collect and Insert New Data

  • This will require the collection of data from vrous sources, many of which will not be financial. Instructions indicting the data required are explained in the pop ups that appear either on the right hand side of the page or by hoveing the cursor over the yellow dots that appear throughout the model. In one sense the kind of information required are the saem as that collected as a part of the Stratgeic Planning exercise. Under the domain of Third Wave Strategy however, it is likely that more will be needed. This is not a problem and not insurmountable. Just keep wprking with the instructions on each page and the content required will become clear.

Step 5: Publish and Share

  • Publish to Power BI Service for team-wide access.

  • Use workspaces and permissions to control visibility and to establish/retain the continual renewal of strategy. remeber, this app facilitates the continual renewal of strategy so its content must be updated to enable that action to be undertaken.

  • In the interests of continuity and the philosophy of renewal, it is recoommended the management of the App is aligned to an organisational learnnig function/capability as a maximum. As a minimum, or as well as the learning function alignment, it is rcommended a Community of Stratgey Practice is established to act as a cross functional/departmental capability concerned solely with your corporate strategy systems and practices.

Power BI Tips:

  • Use bookmarks and tooltips to enhance interactivity.

  • Keep visuals simple and aligned with strategic messaging.

  • Update continually to address errors in assumptions, other 'unknown unknowns', gusesses and estimates that were OK when stratgy was set, but may not be so OK today.

  • Check on the efficicency and effectiveness of the strategy system in general. Strategy is about the future, but the future is unknown, we can't be sure how long our strategic decisisons will remain relevant and reliable.
